Side and back glass

Auto glass replacement

Door, side and back glass replaced, for the panes on a vehicle that are not the windshield.

Chapter 01

Side glass, back glass and the grid between

Side and back windows fail differently from a windshield. They are usually tempered glass, which does not crack in a line. It gives way all at once and falls into small cubes, so a rock, a break-in or a bad bounce off a curb can leave a door window gone and glass pebbles all through the seat and door.

Back glass adds a second problem. Most carry a defroster grid, a row of fine heated lines baked onto the inside, and a broken pane takes the grid with it. A grid that has stopped clearing in the cold, or a back window that has shattered, is the usual sign the pane needs replacing.

Clearing the door, setting the pane

For a door window, the work begins at the door itself. The trim panel comes off so the installer can reach the cavity, and every piece of glass is lifted out, because loose cubes left in the door rattle and can jam the window track. Then the regulator and the channel the glass runs in are checked before the new pane is set and the panel goes back on.

Back glass is set like a windshield. The frame is cleaned, a bead of adhesive goes around the opening, the new pane is pressed into it, and the grid connections are made up. The Byron shop at 111 Jailhouse Alley paints Auto Glass Replacement and Mobile Service on its own sign, so ask on (478) 956-0111 about a vehicle that is parked somewhere else.

Chapter 03

Cleanup and the first weeks

Tempered glass has a habit of turning up again. Small cubes work their way out of the seat folds and door pockets for weeks, so a thorough vacuum is part of the job, and it is fair to ask the installer how the cabin was cleared.

With a new back glass, be gentle with the inside surface, because a scraper or a hard sticker can cut a grid line. With a new door pane, ask the installer how long to leave the window alone before using it, since new glass is set to the channel and the answer depends on the job. A pane that rattles, leaks or sticks in its track is worth a call back.
